WELCOME TO ABLUQTA SOCIETY

ABOUT OUR SOCIAL ENTERPRISE

Abluqta means "Let us step forward" in Inuktitut.

Our mandate is to provide:

  • essential services to the community

  • opportunities and work experience to Inuit with barriers and disabilities in Baker Lake, NU, while providing essential services.

Governed by a small board of directors, Abluqta runs a Thrift Shop/Food Bank Social Enterprise. We have been providing goods and services to the people of Baker Lake since 2017.

What makes our social enterprise different from a charity is that we rely on our community and volunteers to help run our business. In fact, without our volunteers, we simply would not exist.

Abluqta works with Agnico Eagle Mines as a funding sponsor and with this is able to cover some overhead and food bank supplies. However, with the high costs of food in Nunavut and the high need for food, we must work hard to make our money stretch to meet the existing needs. With funds from our sponsors and fundraising activities, Abluqta is able to pay for overhead costs (rent, wages, taxes/workers compensation, business license, training, telephone, internet, etc).

We have regular food bank activities and emergency supplies for those in dire need between food banks. We buy the most cost-effective food that meets the needs of our clients. Food is carefully purchased, with our clients in mind and also trying to secure the best possible 'bang for the buck'.

FOOD BANK SERVICES

Feeding our community

We raise funds to provide food for those in need in our community.

We have regular food distributions, with a particular emphasis on providing food to Elders and families with young children.

We rely on a team of dedicated volunteers to make this possible.

THRIFT SHOP

Providing affordable clothing

Abluqta began in response to a community need for affordable clothing, toys and household items. We have run a Thrift Shop since spring of 2017.

We sell clothing for men, women and children at affordable prices, with proceeds going to the food bank.

We rely on our dedicated volunteers to work in our thrift shop.
